Helping you spot problems early
A children’s eye examination can pick up problems that are easy to miss at home, especially when your child cannot explain what they are seeing. We check for reduced vision, squints, lazy eye, colour vision defects and issues with developing 3D vision, using child-friendly methods that suit younger ages. Headaches, rubbing the eyes, sitting too close to the television and trouble concentrating can all point to a sight problem, while changes in behaviour may sometimes be another sign.
A lazy eye, also known as amblyopia, can run in families, particularly where there is a history of a squint or reduced vision in one or both eyes. That is why we recommend arranging a full sight test around the age of three rather than waiting to see if school screening happens later on. We carry out children’s eye care at Advanced Vision with a calm, personal approach that helps you and your family feel at ease. Early checks can make a real difference because treatment and visual correction work most effectively when problems are found sooner.

What takes place during the visit
Our examination is more detailed than a basic school vision screen, which usually only looks for reduced vision in one or both eyes. We use age-appropriate tests, including pictures and techniques that do not always rely on your child giving a spoken response. That means we can assess younger children more effectively and build a clearer picture of how their eyes are developing. If glasses are needed, we can talk you through modern frame choices that children are often happy to wear, with a much wider range of styles available today.
Visual correction can be important for normal visual development and helping children reach their full potential. Children under 16 can also receive an NHS-funded sight examination and help towards glasses. Contact lenses may also be suitable for some children, particularly those who regularly take part in sports, and we can advise whether they are an appropriate option.
Simple ways to support your child’s eye health
-
Encourage outdoor time: Regular outdoor play and physical activity can support healthy vision. Around two hours outdoors each day is often recommended for children’s eye health.
-
Encourage a balanced diet: Provide nutritious meals and make sure your child drinks enough fluids throughout the day.
-
Protect their eyes from the sun: Teach children never to look directly at the sun and provide good-quality sunglasses when they are outdoors. Look for sunglasses carrying the CE mark and meeting the relevant British Standard.
